Interviewer: How long have you worked in marketing?

Candidate: For five years. I've worked for two companies.

Interviewer: Have you ever managed a team?

Candidate: Yes, I have. I've been managing a team of six since last year.

Interviewer: Have you finished your degree?

Candidate: Not yet. I'm still studying, but I've already completed most of it.

Organiser: If it rains tomorrow, we'll move the event indoors.

Guest: What happens if too many people come?

Organiser: If more than two hundred arrive, we'll open the second hall.

Guest: And if the speaker is late?

Organiser: If he's late, we'll start with the panel discussion. Although we'd prefer to start on time!

Presenter: Good morning. Our top story: the city's new hospital has been opened today.

Reporter: That's right. It was built in just three years, and more than two thousand staff have been trained.

Presenter: Where is it located?

Reporter: It is located near the airport. Patients are treated free of charge for the first month.

Voice 1: Hi, it's Rana. I called to say that I'd be late — I'm stuck in traffic.

Voice 2: Hello, this is the dentist's office. I'm calling to tell you that your appointment has been moved to Thursday.

Voice 3: Hi, it's Dad. Your mum asked if you could buy some milk on your way home. And she wants to know whether you're coming for dinner.

Guide: This is the department where you'll work. The woman who is on the phone is Dalal, our team leader.

Guide: The man whose desk is by the window is Hamza — he handles all the contracts that come from abroad.

Guide: And this is Maryam, who started last week, like you. The printer which is broken is in the corridor — please don't use it!

Friend: I hear you're thinking of leaving your job?

Omar: Yes. I can't stand working late any more, and I've decided to look for something new.

Friend: Don't you enjoy teaching?

Omar: I do, but I'd like to try managing a team. I'm hoping to start a course in September, and I've already begun updating my CV.

Salma: I can't find my keys! They must be in the car.

Husband: No, I've looked. You should have left them on the hook.

Salma: They can't have fallen out of my bag — it was closed. Oh wait, they might be in my coat!

Husband: See? You could have looked there first.

Salma: Here they are! I must be more careful.

Neighbour: Why are you back so early?

Khalid: I missed my flight. By the time I got to the airport, the plane had already taken off.

Neighbour: Hadn't you checked the time?

Khalid: I had — but I'd read the wrong date! I'd been looking forward to this trip for months.

Neighbour: Oh no. Had you booked a hotel?

Khalid: Yes, and I'd paid in advance.

Rana: If I had known about the traffic, I would have left an hour earlier.

Sami: And if you hadn't been late, you wouldn't have missed the first speaker.

Rana: I know. I wish I had checked the map. If only I'd taken the other road!

Sami: Don't worry. The first speaker was boring — if you had heard him, you would have fallen asleep!

Rana: Ha! Well, if I hadn't skipped breakfast, I wouldn't be so hungry now.

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself this time next year?

Lama: I'll be working in a hospital, I hope. By then I'll have finished my training.

Interviewer: And in five years?

Lama: I'll have saved enough to open a small clinic. I'll be living in my own flat, and by then I'll have been working as a nurse for four years.

Manager: You sent the invoice, didn't you?

Assistant: Yes, I did. And I copied the client, too.

Manager: The client hasn't paid yet, has he?

Assistant: No, he hasn't. But he promised to pay on Thursday, didn't he?

Manager: He did. Let's wait until Friday, shall we?

Teacher: Today we are going to look at three kinds of collocations: verb + noun, adjective + noun, and adverb + adjective.

Teacher: For example: 'make a decision', 'heavy traffic', and 'deeply concerned'. Notice that we say 'make a decision' but we don't say 'do a decision'.

Teacher: When you write down a new word, always write two or three partners with it.

Voicemail: Hello, this is Reem from Al Noor Trading. I'm calling in connection with your invoice number 4821. It seems that the payment has not reached us yet. I would be grateful if you could look into it at your earliest convenience. You can reach me on extension 205 until five o'clock. Thank you, and have a good day.
